The $200 million Connect Today, Create Tomorrow comprehensive campaign — the largest in the Ohio Wesleyan University history — is a renewing of their commitment to their founding principles as they chart a bold path forward.

Ohio Wesleyan University (also known as Wesleyan or OWU) is a private liberal arts college in Delaware, Ohio, United States. It was founded in 1842 by Methodist leaders and Central Ohioresidents as a nonsectarian institution, and is a member of the Ohio Five — a consortium of Ohio liberal arts colleges. Ohio Wesleyan has always admitted students irrespective of religion or race and maintained that the university “is forever to be conducted on the most liberal principles.”[9][10]

The 200-acre (81 ha) site is 27 miles (44 km) north of Columbus, Ohio. It includes the main academic and residential campus, the Perkins Observatory, and the Kraus Wilderness Preserve.

In 2010, Ohio Wesleyan had the eleventh highest percentage of international students among liberal arts colleges for the seventeenth straight year. In its 2015 edition of U.S. college rankings, Niche (company) ranked Ohio Wesleyan the 56th (out of 880 colleges) most politically liberal college in the U.S. U.S. News & World Report ranked Ohio Wesleyan 95th among U.S. liberal arts colleges in its 2017 edition.

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series is the world’s largest, most successful fundraising and education event for breast cancer. The race series includes more than 140 events on four continents, with over one million participants coming together every year to take part in the fight against breast cancer.

This important annual event raises significant funds for the breast cancer movement, thanks to supporters and survivors around the world who step up and take action by fundraising for the cause.

A Global Impact

Race for the Cure® truly makes an impact, with 100 percent of the net proceeds allocated to our mission:

  • 75 percent of the net income stays in our community to help fund local programs offering breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment.
  • The remaining 25 percent goes toward Susan G. Komen® Research and Training Grants program.

In addition to raising funds for the breast cancer movement, Race for the Cure® also increases awareness, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease.

Racing for the Cure is More Than Pink™

Every year, in cities around the globe, our allies Race for the Cure® and prove they are More Than Pink™.

These passionate supporters and survivors are not content to simply say they support the breast cancer cause, or wear a pink ribbon. They turn their support into action. They recognize the need to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer, and they get to work.

I Am Komen® is the mission engagement program of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series that motivates people to take action steps that may reduce their risk of breast cancer. It speaks to the importance of early detection and healthy living while encouraging everyone to make a personal commitment to their breast health. I Am Komen® is a “Declaration” to join the Komen community as an ambassador in the fight against breast cancer.

Ohio University is a large, primarily residential, public research university in Athens, Ohio, United States. The first university chartered by an Act of Congress and the oldest in Ohio, it was chartered in 1787 and subsequently reapproved for the territory in 1802 and state in 1804, opening for students in 1809. As of 2016, the university’s total enrollment, including all campuses, was more than 36,800.

Ohio University maintains a selective admission rate with further admission requirements for its schools. The Heritage College of Medicine maintains its separate select admissions criteria. Ohio University offers more than 250 areas of undergraduate study. On the graduate level, the university grants master’s degrees in many of its major academic divisions, and doctoral degrees in selected departments. Ohio University is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching classifies Ohio as a Research University (high research activity) under the Basic Classification category.

Ohio’s athletic teams are called the Bobcats and compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division I level as charter members of the Mid-American ConferenceOhio football has participated in ten bowl games through the 2016 season, while the men’s basketball team has made 13 appearances in the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship.

Susan G. Komen, formerly known as Susan G. Komen for the Cure and originally as The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, often referred to as simply Komen, is the largest and best-funded breast cancer organization in the United States.

Since its inception in 1982, Komen has spent (through 2010) nearly $1.5 billion for breast cancer education, research, advocacy, health services and social support programs in the U.S., and through partnerships in more than 50 countries. Today, Komen has more than 100,000 volunteers working in a network of 124 affiliates worldwide.<

According to the Harris Interactive 2010 EquiTrend annual brand equity poll, Komen was once one of the most trusted non-profit organizations in America. In 2012, Komen’s controversial continued funding for mammogram referrals provided by Planned Parenthood caused a significant decline in donations, event participation and public trust, after an attempt to withdraw Planned Parenthood’s funding resulted in political pressure. The organization was further criticized for its use of donor funds, the CEO’s 64% pay raise after the significant drop in donations, its administration costs, its choice of sponsor affiliations, its role in commercial cause marketing and its use of misleading statistics in advertising. In March 2013, Komen dropped from Charity Navigator‘s highest rating of four stars down to three stars and then to two stars in 2014. As of June 2016, Komen is back to three stars, with a score of 81 out of 100.

Retouched Photos Of Models Now Require A Disclaimer

Questions about whether a perfect-looking model could possibly be real will soon be answered more definitively in France, where new rules stipulate that some digitally altered images must come with a disclaimer.

The law says any models appearing in commercial photography whose bodies have been made thinner or thicker by image processing software must be accompanied by the notice of “photographie retouchée,” or retouched photograph.

Failure to comply with the new law is punishable by a fine of more than $44,000, or 30 percent of the money spent on advertising.

France’s former health minister, Marisol Touraine, initiated the idea, according to the newspaper Le Parisien.

“It is necessary to act on body image in society to avoid the promotion of inaccessible beauty ideals and prevent anorexia among young people,” Touraine said, according to the French daily. It reported that eating disorders affect some 600,000 people in France.

France has a history of taking a stand against the promotion of unhealthy body images. In 2015, it passed a law aimed at banning the hiring of models deemed “excessively thin,”. The French government passed the bill decreeing that models working in the country must possess a medical certificate deeming them fit to work, in a bid to prevent the use of “excessively thin” models. Italy, Spain and Israel have passed similar legislation.

Measured using body mass index (BMI), models’ health will be evaluated by a medical professional – who will be permitted to take into account the individual’s weight, age, and body shape to ultimately determine their wellbeing, The Fashion Law reports – and companies will be prohibited from employing any model not in possession of a certificate. Any company found to be hiring models who have not provided the certificate will be liable to a fine of more than £50,000 and could be given a prison sentence of up to six months.

Despite the seemingly positive agenda behind the move, model agencies in France are less than impressed – with many feeling that regulating and increasing sample sizes as an industry standard would be a kinder and fairer way to legislate.

“The power is in the hands of designers, photographers and editors,” Isabelle Saint-Félix, general secretary of Synam, France’s union of model agencies said. “They’re the ones who make dresses in size 34 or 36 (American sizes 00 or 0), who decide to shoot or feature them. Modeling agencies respond to the demand of advertisers, designers and photographers. One asks models to fit in a dress – not the opposite. I would like everyone to sit around a table and say that the time of models who are too thin is over.”

The Photoshopping rule goes into effect October 1, 2017 in France, but it’s already having a ripple effect across the Atlantic.

Also as of October 1, 2017, Getty Images, the widely used American stock photo agency, is no longer accepting creative content “depicting models whose body shapes have been retouched to make them look thinner or larger,” according to Getty spokeswoman Anne Flanagan.

Flanagan said the move is a direct response to France’s rule. She added the company is not looking to phase out such retouched images, but will be labeling those it already has.

“Altering a model’s body shape as described by the new French law is quite rare in commercial stock photography,” Flanagan said, noting that it is time-consuming and bucks “the increasing trend toward more authentic imagery.”

But Flanagan says the change is an important one nonetheless.

“Our perceptions of what is possible are often shaped by what we see,” she said. “Positive imagery can have direct impact on fighting stereotypes, creating tolerance, and empowering communities to feel represented in society.”

Other companies, including Seventeen Magazine and retailer ModCloth, have pledged not to digitally alter the models they feature.

The nonprofit National Eating Disorders Association, or NEDA, says numerous “studies have linked exposure to the thin ideal in mass media to body dissatisfaction, internalization of the thin ideal, and disordered eating among women.”

“Seventy percent of girls ages 10 to 18 report that they define perfect body image based on what they see in magazines,” said Katherine Record, deputy director with the Massachusetts Health Policy Commission.

Some 30 million Americans suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives, according to NEDA.

To fellow photogs, beware of a scam going around:

I received the following email from Shirley Alban (shirleyalban7@gmail.com) on September 13th.  It looked fishy and I contacted HypeBeast directly who confirmed they do not solicit photography in this way and have never heard of Shirley.

The email reads:

“I saw your portfolio on Photoserve.com. I'm Shirley one of the North America Assistant editors mostly work with T.S. Fox, Jason Dike and Karl Smith. I would like to learn more about your services. we are looking for an experienced photographer to work with on an ongoing blogging and articles. we blog for various online platforms and would love to collaborate with photographers on genre such as beauty, vintage, fashion, lifestyle, and outdoor.

I am compiling shots for hypebeast.com “fashion page” segment and the online fashion magazine is looking for professional and reliable photographers who want to create stunning images. hypebeast is particularly looking for outdoor and urban looks.

If you’re interested in this project, it is important to understand a few details about the project. These are:

• There will be 3 outfits per model, 5 looks for each outfit, which totals 30 looks/images.

If you can handle this, please reply with your full name (Business name), phone number, and address (to be written on your contract and check ). So i can forward a contract to be signed by both parties if the description is satisfactory.

Regards.”

What tipped me off that this was a scam?

There are tiny english errors, but more than that the specific description of what you will shoot, how much you will be paid, and that they are up fronting you $1k without ever having worked with you is a warning sign.  There is more negotiation than this for any legitimate assignment.

Second would be they are paying you, but you get to keep full image rights.

Third is the quick turn-around.

They have never worked with me, but want to cut me a check?  “Give us your full name, phone and address for the check”.

People in some of the Facebook groups that I posted this in have been asking what the scam is with this since Shirley is paying me.

The scams are all a bit different, but Im sure if I followed thru – they would send me a $10k check (or some other amount greater than the agreed upon amount) instead of the $1k deposit and then ask me to pay a ‘stylist’ or another photographer in another city with the excess.  They hope that I’m stupid enough to pay out before their check clears (or in this case bounces) and my pay-out is actually going back to them thru a third party.

I used to play with people like this and have about a dozen fake checks and money orders from scammers.  What I loved was when I refused to pay out before their check cleared and they would threaten to contact the police and played other heavy handed tactics the were just hollow threats.

The response from HypeBeast:

Hi James,

We do not work with a person named 'Shirley Alban'.

Any correspondence to you from our company should have an official email addresses ending in either @hypebeast.com or @101medialab.com. Any other emails you receive without these designations from persons claiming to be an employee, partner, or representative or partner of 101 Media Lab Limited and/or Hypebeast LTD. are fraudulent and very likely being used in furtherance of a potential scam to obtain your personal information, or even in some cases, your moneys.

This is the eighth of an ongoing series of assignments that I had for the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. This was a very meaningful project for me, as I too was adopted, but I had found a forever family when I was only months old.  Many of the children I documented in this series were not so fortunate, spending years in a system that passed them from one home to another until DTFA stepped in and helped them find a stable home life and loving forever family.

On a cold, clear November evening in 2015, Robbin and Steven Brydges climbed into a big white bus in the middle of a Walmart parking lot. It was here, in this unassuming locale, that they met their sons for the first time.

“I knew Dawson loved super heroes,” Robbin shares, “so I’d gotten a manicure with super hero icons on each finger, like Superman’s S and the Bat signal.” They hit it off right away. Over the next few months, Robbin and Steven made several more trips to Ohio to visit Dawson and his brother Dalton, and in May of 2016 brought the boys to their Jacksonville, Florida home for good.

Robbin and Steven hadn’t considered adopting two children. But when Rachel, a Wendy’s Wonderful Kids Recruiter, told them about Dawson and Dalton, they knew they had to keep the boys together. “Dalton has cerebral palsy and epilepsy, so we were nervous,” Steven says. “We didn’t know if we could give him the care he needed.” But the Brydges made the commitment, and it’s made all the difrerence in their lives — and those of Dalton and Dawson. “I kept praying for years and years that they wouldn’t take me away from Dalton,” says Dawson. “I was very afraid.”

Today, the boys are thriving in their home. Dawson is doing well in school, Dalton’s health has markedly improved and the boys’ laughter fills the house. “Life has been much more fulfilling,” Steven says. “It’s a lot more fun to share it with these kids.”

“We all love each other and we’re all kind and we’re all good at having fun together!” – Dawson Brydges, age eight, on his favorite thing about his family

Susan G. Komen Columbus® began in 1993 by a group of motivated and hardworking volunteers. That same passion, carried on throughout the years by thousands of volunteers and dedicated board and staff members, has sustained Komen Columbus and enabled us to raise more than $27 million; $16 million of that has been granted to support local programs, $280,000 in targeted small grants, and  $5 million has supported global research.

Through events like the Komen Columbus Race for the Cure®, Komen Columbus invests 75 percent of its net income to support vital local breast health services in our 30-county service area, and dedicates the remaining net income – 25 percent – to national research to find the cures.

During the 2013-2014 fiscal year, Komen Columbus was recognized as Affiliate of the Year by our global organization.

Below is a 360 view of how Komen Columbus meets the need in our community with your donations and the support of our corporate sponsors. Download a PDF version of this flier.
